Rescued leopard to be released in Satpura National park

INDORE: After spending two-and-half months at Indore's Kamla Nehru Zoological Park, leopard rescued from Sinhasa village is on way to a suitable habitat.

Fully recovered from its injuries, it will be released in Satpura National Park during wee hours of Friday. It is for the first time when a rescued animal after it was brought to Indore zoo is being re-introduced into the wild.

Zoo in charge Dr Uttam Yadav said, "A six member team from Satpura National Park would be here by Thursday evening and will leave with the leopard at around midnight." Yadav said, translocation is being done during night to avoid noise and temperature related issues which could possibly irk the jungle cat. "It will take around six hour for them to cover the distance. Caution will be taken to minimize irritation to leopard," said Yadav, adding that it was the decision of department of forest to shift the leopard.

In last three months, two leopards were rescued and brought to the zoo. One of them, rescued from Barwani died of serious injuries on Tuesday. The leopard being translocated was rescued on February 13 from Sinhasa after a two-day rescue operation in which eight people were injured, including six forest guards. It was found that it had strayed near a village after a failed poaching attempt. in which its right hand got injured.

Chief conservator of forest (CCF) P C Dubey said, injured leopard was under treatment at Indore zoo for quit some time and now as leopard is healthy it is being taken to Satpura. "Freedom is important for everyone, even for animal. So we wanted that wild animal should be in wild," said Dubey.
