THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief minister Oommen Chandy on Thursday said there was a need for a change in the science policy of the state. He was participating in a high-level meet on science and technology here.

He said the science policy was drafted 40 years ago while scientists have to play a major role in addressing climate change, drought, sewage crisis, pollution and environmental problems now. Chandy said the government was committed to the recently unveiled National Science and Technology Innovation Policy 2013, which is aimed at ensuring food security through the best farming practices, increasing food production and addressing the concerns of public health and disease control. The Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment should promote research through a network of scientists and science awareness should be instilled right from school-level, he said.

KSCSTE executive vice-chairman V N Rajasekharan Pillai, member secretary K K Ramachandran and other officials attended the meeting.
