NEW DELHI, APRIL 6: After submitting a report on the disappearance of tigers in Sariska sanctuary, the CBI is now planning to take up investigation of cases of poaching registered by the Rajasthan Police.

The announcement came as the Rajasthan HC issued a showcause notice to the state government on the disappearance of tigers from the wildlife reserves of Sariska and Ranthambhore and sought its reply within three weeks. A division bench comprising Justices S.K. Keshot and Ajay Rastogi issued the notice to the state chief secretary on a petition filed by environmentalist Babulal Jaju in which he alleged that Rs 120 crore was spent by the state government since 1974 on various tiger conservation projects, but ‘‘all in vain’’. CBI director U.S. Misra said a holistic approach was needed in managing tiger parks. The CBI team, headed by DIG V.K. Sharma, had recently submitted a report to the Prime Minister. ‘‘Inquiries revealed that the number of tigers in the last survey was inflated and evidence has been found that at least 10 tigers have been poached,’’ he said. The CBI report had also suggested ways to increase the tiger population and insisted on providing training to the personnel guarding these tigers parks.

Misra stressed the officials managing the sanctuary were not trained enough and there was hardly any infrastructure though the Centre provides funds and the state government manages it.

The CBI found proof of poachers’ presence; four of them have been arrested meanwhile. Misra said the CBI planned to re-investigate the nine poaching cases registered by the Rajasthan Police in the past.
