DALTONGANJ: Officials of the Palamu Tiger Reserve (PTR) are alert so that they can avoid poaching of deer during Holi. Field director of PTR S E H Kazmi issued an advisory on Friday to dissuade people from feasting on deer meat.

Sources from the reserve said poaching of deer in the Betla National Park of PTR rises during this time as deer meat is hot favourite for Holi celebrations.

The advisory wants the wireless system of PTR to work 24x7 from Saturday till March 28. This apart, the advisory mentions a round-the-clock patrolling at the park. Check posts are to be manned with great care and sincerity. Many of them are being manned by daily wagers like the ones at Rud, Bijaypur, Merarhii, Sohar etc. The PTR officials have been asked to raid shops and village haats to find out if deer meat or item made of animal skin is sold there.

Sources from the reserve said to curb poaching the PTR officials are going to adopt a similar method which is used to record sighting of tigers. When tigers are spotted the information is provided through wireless and recorded in the register along with place and time.

A snare made of wires taken from cycle tyres is used to trap deer. Once the deer falls prey to this device, the noose is tightened to such an extent that the deer dies out of shock. Holi witnesses such trappings the most. D S Srivastava, an environmentalist, said, "These nooses are dangerous for deer. Most of these are placed near water bodies or in areas which are covered with long grasses."

The deer in particular, and the wildlife of PTR in general, face threats from road accidents and local mafias too. Chhipadohar railway station is used by them to transport timber and wildlife.

The tiger reserve is crisscrossed with roads and the one between Betla and Netarhat witnesses frequent collision of wildlife and high speed vehicles.
