Corbett buffer zone expanded, tiger population goes up to 287

DEHRADUN: The Uttarakhand forest department on Tuesday decided to bring Kotri and Duggada reserve forest areas spread over 160 square km from Lansdowne forest division to Corbett Tiger Reserve's buffer zone in Pauri district.

The decision to include this reserve forest areas which has 12 tigers in Corbett's buffer zone, spread in 1290 square km, was taken a day after chief minister Vijay Bahuguna made announcement in Ramnagar during Corbett's 40th anniversary.

Chief principal conservator of forest R B S Rawat said that government will issue a formal order in a day or two.

Rawat said decision to include these areas under Corbett was taken to prevent a spurt in tiger poaching and to conserve tigers and other big cat species. Rawat said after the inclusion, the tiger population in Corbett will go up from 275 to 287 tigers.

A senior IFS officer in Dehradun said Corbett will now get additional funds from Union ministry for environment and forests.
