Correspondent :
The Earth Hour, a global campaign of the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) aimed at raising awareness and inspiring individual action on climate change, received a boost on Monday with actor Jiiva pledging his support to it.

Stating that he is honoured to be involved in such a campaign, the actor said while addressing the press here: “I believe in the power of individual action. The campaign, I am sure, will inspire millions to become aware of their responsibility towards the environment. It is only when individuals make concerted efforts, they add up to something substantial.”

The Earth Hour, calls for the switching off non-essential lights every year for an hour to show the need for a better environment, has seen iconic monuments like the Rashtrapati Bhavan, India Gate, Mysore Palace and Gateway of India switching off their lights in its support. This year, Earth Hour would be observed from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm on March 23.

Jiiva said he was inspired by eco-friendly construction designs he encountered during a visit to France, and added that he would use the same in his new house.

The campaign was in its fifth year in the nation and had till now covered around 150 cities. Head (campaigns) of WWF India, Aarti Khosla, said that they aimed at reaching out to more cities. She added that the campaign would call on individuals to adopt household products powered by renewable energy, organisations to adopt renewable energy solutions, and governments to promote policies favouring production and uptake of renewable energy.
