GOLAGHAT, March 5 – Incidents of killing of animals, cutting of trees and destruction of forest resources are increasing. Poaching has been increasing in Merapani, a sensitive area of the Assam-Nagaland border.

On March 1, CRPF personally conducted an operation and recovered two elephant tusks. The CRPF personnel detected one Mulluk Ali (54) of Nalanipather under Merapani police station who was carrying the tusks from Furkating on his bike (AS05 V 2475). He was caught at Gomari Tiniali by the CRPF men. The officer incharge of the Merapani PS has taken up the matter seriously. Sushil Gogoi, O/C Merapani told this correspondent that he has been investigating the entire incident with the co-operation of the CRPF commandant.

It may be pertinent to mention that the poachers, have created a network with poachers of Nagaland and have been indulging in looting and destroying forest resources killing animals and are also involved in the drugs trade.

The local concious people alleged that the district administration has paid no heed till now to nab the poachers. The people demanded from the Forest department and the border force stationed at Merapani to take stern measures against the poachers immediately.
