IITM to have open house on February 28

PUNE: The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) will celebrate the National Science Day on February 28. An 'open day' programme for the general public, students and the media has been organised at the institute premises during 10 am to 5 pm, a statement issued by the institute said.

The release stated that the open day is an attempt to showcase their research before the public and enabling them to come and see what scientists at IITM are doing, how the research will solve their problems and how it can benefit the masses. All the laboratories of IITM campus at Pashan will be kept open for the public, students and media representatives to visit, have a look around and interact with the scientists concerned.

The open day is an opportunity to ask direct questions about meteorology and climate to the IITM scientists.

A presentation/talk on career in meteorology, atmospheric sciences and climate change will be arranged for students. Some popular science films on meteorology and atmospheric sciences will also be screened.

IITM was started in 1960 to study the fundamental atmospheric problems and understand the mechanism of monsoon, weather systems and climate related processes in the tropical region. IITM is a premiere research institute to generate scientific data in the field of meteorology and atmospheric sciences that has potential application in various fields such as agriculture, economics, health, water resources, transportation, communications, etc.
