MYSORE: The forest department on Thursday indicated that it is thinking to adopt eco-friendly measures to attend to the needs of the field staff.

What has come in handy for it is the successful adoption of eco-friendly and sustainable technologies for the construction of an anti-poaching camp at Bandipur, which is wants to emulate. Inaugurating the Avarepura camp in Maleyur range, project director (Field Tiger) B J Hosamath said: This unit is a pilot project wherein the eco-friendly technologies have been adopted. This should take care of the water and energy requirements of the ground staff.

The forest department thanked Mumbai-based Wildlife Conservation Trust for contribution made to build the anti-poaching camp, a first of its kind initiative in tiger reserves across India. It is aimed to extend basic living conditions to the foresters on patrolling duty. Incidentally, Bandipur is also the first tiger sanctuary in India to post Special Tiger Protection Force to man the forested area.

The premier National Institute of Engineering said it will implement at the ground level many green technologies it has devised at the Centre for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technologies (CREST). The NIE-CREST has implemented the Avarepura project. N Ramanuja, the NIE secretary, pointed at the use of green technologies like use of mud blocks and other renewable energy technologies, said, "The NIE-CREST will be keen to implement many more eco-friendly technologies if the forest department provide an opportunity."

The NIE-CREST director Shamsundar said Avarepura is the practical demonstration of the technologies they are working on and asked the forest department to consider adopting them at other anti poaching units.
