TINSUKIA, June 8: “Adopting a tree is a fine way of helping the environment”— the message was spread among the students by the Directorate of Field Publicity, Dibrugarh and Suryodaya (NGO) at Gopal Krishna Girls’ School, Makum recently in a special awareness campaign on environment education.
The campaign began with planting of tree saplings by the students, teachers and others in the school campus which was followed by an awareness meeting presided over by headmistress Lila Gogoi along with Amiyo Lahon, a teacher of the school. The meeting was addressed by Akhil Baruah from Suryodaya (NGO) who gave students the knowledge on environment education. He said that the NGO and Lion’s Club have taken another initiative to plant additional 10 lakh plants within one year in every nook and corner of Tinsukia district with a view to make the district greener and pollution free. Stressing on ‘plant-preservation’ he said that for this purpose a group of people or students will be given responsibility of taking care of these plants. Such ‘tree-adoption’ will be started in school campus by students and the best group will also be awarded by the NGO. On the occasion, an extempore speech competition on ‘environment matter’ was organized among the students, which was judged by teachers of the school Amiya Lahon, Meenakshi Gogoi and Nirupa Barthakur. Madhabi Phukan, Saptashree Das, Ritan Moran and Mousumi Gogoi won the first, second, third and fourth prize respectively. Earlier, Pranab Kumar Nath, Field Publicity Officer, Dibrugarh highlighted the aims and objectives of the programme. He said the danger emerging from climate change needs urgent attention from all concerned including school students and the threats emerging from rampant use and disposal of plastic items have to be addressed to ensure environmental safety. This has been informed by Pranab Kumar Nath, Field Publicity Officer, Dibrugarh in a release.
