Green campaigns mark World Environment Day in the Nilgiris

Stickers bearing conservation messages pasted on buses

Activities of a varied kind marked the observance of the World Environment Day in various parts of the Nilgiris on Tuesday.

An anti-plastics campaign was jointly organized by the Nilgiris district administration and the Pollution Control Board at the Central Bus Stand here.

Led by the Project Director, Hill Area Development Programme (HADP) Srinivas R.Reddy, officials including the Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) S.Kavitha and green activists urged the people particularly tourists to shun plastic bags, bottles, cups, plates etc. They were asked to go in for alternatives.

As part of the campaign stickers bearing green messages were pasted on buses and also distributed among those present.

A rally was taken out. A cleaning campaign was also conducted on the Kalhatty road by National Green Corps volunteers of the GRG Matriculation School, Vazhaithottam.

Under the aegis of the Public Awareness Association of Udhagamandalam a programme was conducted at the CSI CMM Primary school here to enhance awareness about the need to conserve elephants and protect their migratory routes.

The Nilgiris Environment and Cultural Service Trust (NEST) organized a meeting at the Nirmala School here to promote environmental awareness among children.

The Island Trust, a Kotagiri based non-governmental organization and the Indian Red Cross Society, the Nilgiris, teamed up to organize a seminar and a tree planting campaign at Keradamattam near Kodanad.

Sixty-four seedlings were planted by Ramu Baba head of the Abu Babaji Charitable Mission Trust,

K.R.Mani, Chairman, IRCS, the Nilgiris; M.L.Alphonse Raj, Managing Trustee, Island Trust; Udhayakumar, Forest Ranger and others participated in the proceedings.

The seminar focused on the consequences of climate change.

At a meeting held under the aegis of the National Green Corps, Coonoor and the Beru Trust at the Hillfort Matriculation School in Keircombai near Kotagiri food security and green economy were highlighted by the school correspondent D.Ravikumar.
