As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, The Hindu , in association with the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board, Vijayawada, will observe World Environmental Day by organising a series of activities on June 3 and 5. The Institute of Engineers, Vijayawada, is a partner in the awareness drive. In keeping with the theme of the World Environment Day-2012 — Green Economy: Does it Include You? — the objective is to involve various sections and people from different walks of life in the awareness drive. On June 3, drawing and essay-writing competitions will be organised at the Institution of Engineers, Velagapudi Ramakrishna memorial auditorium in K.L. The two events will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The participants will be divided into sub-juniors (classes 4 to 7), juniors (classes 8 to 10), and seniors (Intermediate and above). Three prizes will be given in each category.

On June 5, district Collector S.A.M. Rizvi will flag off a ‘Green Rally' at Benz Circle to Loyola College at 6 a.m. ‘Green' enthusiasts, including industrialists, members of various walkers' associations, school and college students, display placards with thought-provoking slogans.

Vice-Chancellor of K.L. University G.L. Datta will be the chief guest for a meeting scheduled for the evening at the Institute of Engineers, Governorpet. Experts will deliver talks on environment issues, which will be followed by prize distribution. The APPCB, on its part, plans to take up a series of awareness activities such as conducting rallies, sapling plantation drive, distribution of cloth bags, pamphlets on environmental protection issues, with special focus on climate change, water conservation, energy conservation, prevention of plastic use, and conducting medical camps in villages.
