The Centre for Humanitarian Assistance Trust (CFHAT), a NGO engaged in multiple environmental programmes, child rights, low carbon farming and other areas, is organising a children's national awareness yatra on environment protection and climate change from May 22 to 27 from Kanyakumari to Chennai and Semiliguda to Chennai, simultaneously to create massive awareness on environmental protection and industrial pollution.

Dubbed as Green Ambassadors, about 1000 schoolchildren in buses and other modes of transport will join the yatra from all directions that will culminate at Chennai.

Talking to the media on the occasion CFHAT director Sasi Prabha said that the green movement was basically a children's movement for climate justice. The climatic change and its impact has become an important area of discussion and concern at the global level. It is a well known fact that any disaster anywhere on earth would first affect children. So far there was no major discussion at the international level towards ensuring a safe environment and a world fit for children, who constitute 45 percent of the world population which is about 350 crore, she said.

Children from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Chattisgarh and Jarkhand are together organising the Yatra. From the Andhra side buses will start from Kotauvratla in Visakhapatnam district and will touch Parawada, Adduroaddu, Tuni, Amalapuram, Eluru, Vijayawada, Guntur, Ongole and Nellore before reaching Chennai. Children will address wayside meetings and present cultural shows to educate the general public. Dr. Sashi Prabha said that since 1980 several international conventions have been held on the issue of global warming and environmental protection in places like Stockholm. Despite world leaders meeting every year there was no significant progress in resolving the global problem.

A high school student Anantha Lakshmi said that not only the rulers and policy makers, the common man too was responsible for the degradation of forests, increasing vehicular pollution and failure to raise plantations at their house, street and city level.

She said that this Yatra was meant to educate the common people on their contribution to degradation of environment and to tell them what they could do to reverse the trend. The main attraction in the Yatra will be children addressing en-route public rallies aimed at educating elders.
