India's stand to be crucial for future climate deal

NEW DELHI: France today said India's stand on climate change will be a significant factor to arrive at an agreement in the future and stressed the need to understand specific conditions of countries involved in the issue.

"It is very important for us to know exactly what the approach of India is (on the issue of climate change) and to appropriate its point of view," French Ambassador for Climate Change Negotiations Serge Lepeltier said here today.

"France thinks that for future climate negotiations, India will be crucial and it is very important for us to know exactly what the approach of India is. If we want a good agreement in 2015, it is very important that all countries appropriate their agreements," he said.

India, along with China, is the third largest economy of Asia and requires plenty of different forms of energy to power its economic growth.

Talking to mediapersons at the end of his two-day visit to New Delhi, during which he interacted with think-tanks working on climate change and senior government officials dealing with the subject, Lepeltier said it would be too early to arrive at any conclusion from the discussions.

Replying to a question whether there has been any change in the stance of European Union (EU) insisting on a single binding treaty to cut greenhouse gas emissions since the Durban summit in December last year, he said "since Durban, it is only February. But in EU, we are in reflection to know how to build the foundation for a good agreement in future."

"Of course, Durban was very important, because it is a new process for the future (for dialogues on climate change)...There has not been a change in one month," he said.

On outcome of his meetings here, he said "at this moment, we are not making conclusion, we are in reflection. We are at the beginning of the discussion and the agreement will take place in 2015."
