Concern over increasing pollution

HYDERABAD: Three major climatic phenomena -- El Nino or La Nina, Indian Ocean Dipole and Atlantic Multi-Decadal Oscillation -- have been determining India's economy every year, Director of the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Sciences (INCOIS) S. Satheesh Chandra Shenoi has said.

Delivering the Suri Balakrishna Memorial Lecture organised jointly by Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences and National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) on World Earth Day here on Thursday, Dr. Shenoi said it was human civilisation that had created ecological problems on earth and it was for them to solve the issues. Otherwise humanity would end up at a point of no return, he cautioned expressing serious concern over increasing pollution and depleting natural resources.

Warming of the atmosphere due to carbon emissions had resulted in a 0.5 degree Celsius temperature rise globally between 1880-2000 and the heat was mostly absorbed by the oceans. Similarly, the content of carbon dioxide had increased from 295 to 380 ppm during 1882-2004. However, the rate of warming had come down from 2003 puzzling scientists studying climate change, Dr. Shenoi said during his talk on “Oceans and climate change'.

Stating that a warm-pool across Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal would mostly influence the monsoon in the country, he stressed it was necessary that the latter held higher heat than the former for normal rains. But, studies had indicated that temperature in Arabian Sea was going up since 1995.

More rain

The climate models in vogue and studies also indicated an increase in temperature and rain in India, but there was need for more data and understanding on the developments in the oceans. Rain in the western coast and north-eastern parts will decrease and it will increase in Rajasthan, northern parts of Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh in future, he said.

Director of Centre for Cellular Molecular Biology (CCMB) Ch. Mohan Rao, Director of NGRI Y.J. Bhaskara Rao, and Director of AP Akademi of Sciences V.P. Dimri spoke.
