BANGALORE: As cities prepare to observe the World Earth Hour on Saturday, many organisations here have committed themselves to be a little more friendly to our fragile planet between 8.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m.

Earth Hour is a global campaign launched by World Wide Fund for Nature on the last Saturday of March every year to raise awareness about climate change. Households and organisations are asked to switch off non-essential lights and appliances for an hour.

Infosys will launch a Clean-'n'-Green Bengaluru Drive with its Green Connect team planning a clean-up drive on M.G. Road and Brigade Road. Apart from switching off power for an hour at all Infosys facilities across nine cities, it is also conducting contests on ‘My 60 Minutes for Earth'.

Solar-powered music band, Solar Punch, will perform.

In the run-up to the event, the ING Vysya Bank will launch its first solar-powered ATM at BTM Layout. A signature campaign would be launched at the Bengaluru International Airport where the bank will also distribute baggage tags with the message, “I support the Earth Hour, the best savings scheme in the world”. Candlelight events will be organised in the airport and four malls in the city.

The Bangalore Trades Association, one of the oldest trade bodies in the city, has appealed to traders across the city to participate in the Earth Hour.

‘Responsible Luxury'

While the ITC Gardenia has been observing Responsible Luxury by dimming the lights in lobby and atrium between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. daily, it has also organised Earth Hour programme on Saturday.

Employees of CDC Software will initiate ecofriendly activities during the hour.
