A leopard reportedly died after being run over by a speeding vehicle in Shivpuri late afternoon on Wednesday. The forest staff was on way to gather the carcass of the 'wild animal' till reports last came in.

The Divisional Forest Officer Shivpuri told The Pioneer over telephone that the death of a wild animal had been reported from the AB Road. He accepted that vehicle hit had resulted in the mortality but declined to confirm weather the animal was a leopard.

The DFO informed that the forest staff was on the way to gather the body of the animal and added that animal's identity could be confirmed only after receiving the body. However, one of the forest employees pleading anonymity confirmed that the dead animal was a leopard but failed to provide more details.

Scores of leopards have lost their lives due to various reasons in the past few months across the State. The reasons include; road accidents, poaching and bashing at the hands of villagers during the intrusions of these spotted felines into the human habitations in search of prey.
