BANGALORE: K.K. High School, Varthur and Sri Vani Education Centre (SVEC), Basaveshwarnagar, have won the first and second places respectively at the Bangalore chapter of the T.N. Khoshoo Ecology and Environment Award for Schools 2011.

Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) organised a mela to announce the winners on Monday. K.K High School's well crafted campaign for dry and wet waste management was carried to schools, teachers, localities and corporate audiences through the efforts of the students. SVEC students visited dump sites and investigated the problems related to waste management. They documented their efforts in a film.

Top four projects

The mela provided the shortlisted schools a platform to showcase, interact and learn through peer group discussions.

The top four projects belonged to K.K English High School — Solid Waste: A Threat to Water Bodies and Concern for Air Pollution; Sri Vani Education Centre — Prakruthi Jagruthi; Embassy Public School — An Action Plan for Solid Waste Management in the School; Delhi Public School (North) — DPS fights Dengue.

Student representatives from each school gave a presentation about the purpose, sustainability and methodology of their projects. The winning schools will be given a cash award and trophy at the Khoshoo Memorial Award in Conservation, Environment and Development ceremony, to be held in October this year in Delhi. Environmentalists and practitioners will be felicitated for outstanding achievements in the areas of conservation, environment and sustainable development on that day.
