Scientist focusses on threats to biodiversity

Eminent scientist and Professor of Botany, University of Delhi, Prof A K Bhatnagar on Friday said that climate change and the phenomenon of global warming have emerged as major threats for biodiversity.

"Biologists must come forward to suggest effective measures for conservation of biodiversity," said Prof Bhatnagar in his inaugural address in the two-day national conference on 'Bio-Diversity: Challenges and Opportunities' which began at Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak.

Conference is being organised by The MDU Department of Botany. In his key note address, Prof Bhatnagar talked in detail about the greenhouse effect and its impact on crops. Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences (MDU) Prof S N Mishra in his address underlined the importance of biodiversity management at grassroots level.

MCM to have a panel discussion: MCM DAV College for Women, Sector 36, Chandigarh, is organising a thought provoking panel discussion on 'Women Entrepreneurship: Opportunities and Challenges' on February 26 in the college premises. The event will bring together students, aspiring women entrepreneurs, academicians, NGOs and parents face to face with entrepreneurial giants and will also prepare them to face the challenges in their way of success.

PU welcomes companies: The Panjab University invites private, public sector and multinational companies to participate in its first ever 'Job Fair' being held on the campus from March 4 to 6 wherein the companies can recruit students having done degrees, diplomas in Arts, Sciences, Engineering and Management courses.

PU has national symposium: Biotechnology Department, Panjab University (PU), organised the national symposium on 'Frontiers in Biotechnology' in the campus which was attended by nearly 200 delegates from the PU and its various affiliated colleges. Director IHBT, Palampur Dr P S Ahuja delivered the key note address. He talked on the improvements of various crops including rice, wheat and maize.

ILS team brings laurels: In continuation with its tradition of winning accolades, the students from the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) have brought laurels for the Institute once again by winning an All India National Moot Competition 2011 organised by the University Law College, Bangalore University from February 11 to 13.

Punjabi varsity organises seminar: Vice Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala, Prof Jaspal Singh on Friday said: "Drama is the oldest genre in literature and its relationship with humanity is as old as life itself" during the inauguration of two-day national seminar on 'Reassessing World Drama: Visions Experiments and Traditions' on the varsity campus. The varsity's English department organised the seminar.

Veterinary varsity don wins award: Assistant Professor in teaching veterinary clinical complex, Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (LLRUVAS), Hisar, Prof Gyan Singh has been awarded with best poster presentation award in 11th Indian Veterinary Congress and XVIII annual conference of Indian Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Research and National Symposium on 'Veterinary Science and Education on move: Critical Gaps and Needs' being organised by Apollo College of Veterinary Science, Jaipur.
