The body of a leopard that suffocated to death after finding itself trapped in a snare has been found in Rajaji National Park over the weekend.

National park director SS Rasaily said one more snare was found near the agricultural fields bordering the forest in a combing operation following the discovery of the dead feline.

National park personnel discovered a leopard's body hanging on a tree in Motichur range on Saturday. Park director SS Rasaily reached the site along with other officials on being informed about the discovery. Sources said the leopard had found itself trapped in a metal snare placed near the croplands adjoining the forest area but had been able to free its limbs from the snare after some struggle.

It is believed that the animal climbed a tree, about 40 feet tall, with the metal snare around its belly with a loose cable tied to it. While getting down, a portion of the snare got stuck in the branches leading to the leopard asphyxiating to death.

The cause of death was confirmed in the post mortem examination after which the animal's carcass was burnt. Another snare was found near the farmlands bordering the forest area during combing conducted in the area, Rasaily said. The snare was meant for poaching of boars and deer which tend to enter the croplands. Patrolling has been increased near farms and human settlements bordering the forest area.
