With the onset of winters in the central and northern Asia, the migratory birds have started flocking the wetland of Pong Dam in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. More than 50,000 migratory birds have thronged the lush green wet land of the beautiful Kangra valley so far.

According to the reports of the scientists of Council for Environment Science and Technology, there are about 1,00,000 to 1,20,000 birds in totality in these areas out of which 40 per cent birds are migratory and visit the wet land of Pong dam every year.

After the arrival of these migratory birds, the bird watchers from all over the world have started visiting the area and have come lively with the arrival of both tourists and the birds.

These days the different categories of these Siberian cranes have become a centre of attraction for every body visiting Pong Dam. The scientists say that the different category of these migratory birds like coot, common pochard, bar headed goose, tufted duck, large cormorant and ruddy shale duck are the main centre of attraction for the bird watchers here, mainly foreign tourists.

Pong Dam is the biggest dam of the country and the wet land created by this dam has become a permanent home for several migratory birds that come here every winter and go back in summer.

The Pong dam wetland authority has formed a special team to keep a check on the illegal poaching of these birds. The Forests Department has deputed a special forest officer here to keep a vigil on the poaching of these cranes.

There is good amount of water in the Lake because of the rainy season and the experts say that there is possibility of arrival of large number of birds to this area. As per the reports of Forest Department, these birds started arriving in the middle of September and would continue till February end.

The official posted at the Pong dam wetland said that the birds come here because of extreme temperatures in their native place and go back when the weather goes fine there in the month of April and till then these birds stay here only. The only problem which these beautiful birds are facing are from the poachers and because of very less forests staff posted here, poaching is posing a big threat to these beautiful foreign tourists to this wetland.
