‘Adopt vegetarian food habits to save environment’

Noted spiritual guru and founder of Art of Living Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on Tuesday stressed the need of adopting vegetarian food habits to save environment from further degradation. “Even if 10 per cent of the country’s population turns vegetarian, the green gas effect would be reduced to a great extent to save environment,” said Sri Sri Ravi Shankar while inaugurating a two-day long national seminar on ‘Global Environmental Issues and Climate Change’ organised by the Science Association of MCM DAV College for Women, Sector 36, Chandigarh.

The seminar was organised to initiate the talk on global environmental issues, environment friendly approach towards life and to introduce methods for peaceful co-existence between man and nature.

He said when women take charge, development is bound to happen as they are more influential upon the society.

He discussed the hazardous effects of pollution both environmental and emotional upon the planet earth. While encouraging the students to use organic food, non toxic cosmetics and advised the students to follow the laws of nature for a harmonious and progressive tomorrow.

The theme of the event was introduced by the convenor of the seminar and Dean, Science Association, Alka Kansra.

She elaborated on the responsibility of all humans to create awareness amongst the people that environment protection is essential for survival of mankind.

A souvenir was also released on the occasion. As many as 30 inter-disciplinary papers were read and discussed in the morning and evening technical sessions. The event also included a promotion of organic foods and the poster exhibition to generate awareness about environmental preservation.

PU students to meet Governor: A group of six students on behalf of Panjab University (PU) student community went to submit a memorandum regarding 15 per cent hike in the hostel food to Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil.

Navneet Thakur, Sandeep, Mohit, Meharpreet Singh and Navdeep Brar from third-year law and Nikhil from Philosophy Department went to meet Governor and apprise him of the sudden increase in the mess food rates. Since Patil was away, his office asked them to come later.

Seminar in PU: The Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, Panjab University (PU) on November 11 and 12 is organising an international seminar on ‘Coinage of the Imperial Guptas and their contemporaries: New perspectives” at the university’s ICSSR Complex. Vice Chancellor Prof RC Sobti will inaugurate the seminar.

Dr Ellen M Raven of the University of Leiden, Netherlands, will deliver the keynote address.

ABVP organises rally: Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) one of the students’ outfits in the Panjab University (PU) on Tuesday protested against the commercialisation of education and submitted a memorandum to Vice Chancellor Prof RC Sobti, highlighting the points like equal pay for equal work, to avoid taking teachers on contract basis, to reduce fee charges and to give proper scholarships to the research scholars.
