Haryana surveying climate change effect in last decade

Waking up to the much-hyped admonitions of climate change after-effects on the ecosystem, Haryana Government is carrying out a feasibility assessment survey in all the districts to scrutinise situation pertaining to the climate changes in the last decade.

“The State Government is carrying out a survey concerning the climate change, that will recapitulate the effects of climate change on diverse spheres of various districts here,” a senior official of Haryana Government told The Pioneer.

The objective of the survey is to ascertain the existent situation in the State owing to the climate changes occurring around the globe.

The official said that the survey will certainly assist to abridge the ever-increasing concerns about the consequences of the climate change.

“The impact of climate change on forests, water resources, agriculture or crops, animal husbandry, pollution, health etc will be reviewed during the survey in all the districts of the State,” said the senior official. The official said: “Certainly, there are several ways to combat climate change and respond timely and effectively to the emerging concerns of global climate change, which is also termed as global warming. To kick things off, the State Government is executing the assessment study that will assist the State to curtail the dire straits for climate talks that is stirring the globe at present.”

Haryana Department of Environment has been conferred with the onus to carry out the assessment analysis in the State. In a recent meeting of the top hierarchy of the Department with the top brass of the State Government, it was decided that a cumulative report will be prepared by the concerned officers in every district.Talks with the officials concerned in all 21 districts are on and the State Government and Haryana Department of Environment will assist the district authorities and concerned departments to carry out the survey, which will be supervised by an expert in this field.The report will include the observations of field officers of the concerned Department of

Environment in every district, who will study and analyse the current condition with the previous prevailed conditions in every area, including food, water resources, animal husbandry, etc.

“Though a deadline to prepare and submit the report has not been fixed by the Department, we are expecting that all the districts will submit the report within two months,” said the official.

Giving an overview of the ongoing worldwide climate talks, the official said the people generalise the situation of climate change with the change in extreme weather conditions and rise in temperature observed on earth in the last decade, but the climate change is not only limited to this and has several dimensions.

Citing an example, the official said that recently in a study done by one of the European universities, it was highlighted that food supply is one of the major dimensions of the climate change and will severely be affected due to it and the climate change also threatens the food supply of over millions of people in Asia in the nearing future.

The official further said: “Nevertheless, every such study is still uncertain about the actual impact of climate change hence the said survey that the Haryana Government has planned will definitely provide us with some potential information to lay the groundwork to deal with the future challenges.”
