KOLKATA, MARCH 8. India will be among the special invitees at a G 8 roundtable meeting in London later this month to consider the challenge of achieving a sustainable and secure energy future for all in a lower carbon world by 2050.

Stating this, the British Acting High Commissioner, Mark Runacres, said Once the energy and environmental ministerial roundtable was over, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would have an opportunity to discuss these matters at the G8 summit in July. Mr. Runacres was here to participate in an interactive session on climate change and renewable energy organised by the British Deputy High Commission. Agreeing that the key priority for India was energy security and accessibility, the British diplomat said that even in the medium term, India was likely to find growth more sustainable by focusing on clean technologies, renewable energy and energy efficiencies. Sudipta Das, associate director, Ernst & Young said India's first clean development mechanism (CDM) project was expected to get its registration by May 2005. By December, a large number of Indian companies were expected to get registration from the United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC). He said almost all the top corporate houses including the Tatas, the Birlas, and the Goenkas as well some multinationals like HLL were set to implement CDM projects for greenhouse gas reduction, which will enable the companies to earn carbon credits.
