Climate protesters block access to U.K. oil refinery

The Hindu , Sunday, October 17, 2010
Correspondent :
Climate change demonstrators blocked a road to a major oil refinery near London to slow the flow of fuel to the British capital.

Saturday’s demonstration was organized by a group called Crude Awakening, which says about 500 people joined the protest. Their target was the Swiss-owned Coryton oil refinery 40 km east of London.

Television video showed protesters in all—white jumpsuits breaking through police lines in some places, but Essex police described the demonstration as “peaceful.” Police said there had been no arrests, and that demonstrators began to disperse at nightfall.

Protester Terri Orchard says “we don’t have a hope of tackling climate change if we don’t find a way to start moving beyond oil.”
