KOLKATA: A renewable energy Entrepreneurship Park, coming up in north 24 Parganas here will be housing infrastructural facilities to help set up alternative energy centres.

West Bengal renewable energy development agency director S P Gon Choudhuri said that the park which will come up next month will have a state-of-the-art regional renewable energy institute to cater to the demands of not only the country, but the entire south and south Asian region.

Underscoring the great importance for the first such entrepre- neurship park here, Dr Choudhuri, a recipient of the world's premier green Oscar on renewable energy, told an interactive session on global climate change and the green house effect yesterday, that by Re-directing the solar energy and proper use of other alternative energy sources like Bio gas and rice ash, as much as 1,000 MW of power could be generated in India alone.

''To begin with, we have set a moderate target of generating at least 100 Mw of power by 2008,'' he said and added that at present about 100,000 people in West Bengal alone had been using renewable Enery sources as electricity to light up their homes and places of work generating about five MW of power.''

The seminar which was organised under the banner of the British deputy high commission was also addressed by acting British high commissioner mark runacres, deputy high commissioner in eastern India Andrew Halla, national director Ernst young and professor of economics, Jadavpur university professor Joyashree Roy.

The British high commissioner talked about the need for forming a much wider global partnership among different countries and regretted that in spite of the tremendous work, India had kept it self out of the partnership drive so far.

Ms Roy urged the major countries to be more responsible in coming to terms with the Kyoto protocol and not to pass on the blame on the developing countries like India and Brazil to take up the major mantle of work.
