A tiger died after it was washed away in the strong water stream charged with monsoon rain in the thick forests of Ramnagar forest division’s Kotabag area while a leopard was reportedly killed during a fight with a tiger in the highly guarded Corbett Tiger Reserve (CTR)’s Dhela range.

The body of the tiger was recovered from Rudki village that falls in Syat van panchyat on Thursday. It seems the tiger, aged around four/five years, was washed away by a rivulet charged by rainwater. As the body was partly decomposed, it seems the tiger died on Wednesday or so.

Being a hilly region the Kapkotbag area along the Kaladhungi forest range, though rich in its biodiversity and flora and fauna making it a favorable destination for wild species like tiger and other animals, seasonal rivulets charged with heavy rains during monsoon season are always dangerous for them.

The fact is that as the incident has suggested even a young tiger could not resist the strong current of water, said the concerned forest officials.

Only a minor part of the tiger body got decomposed perhaps due to injuries that it sustained while being carried in the water current, added the sources.

Ramnagar forest division sources further informed that the foresters/forest guards found the body of the tiger lying along the stream late on Wednesday evening. But as it was found at odd hours the forest officials carried out the postmortem and other formalities to dispose off the body of the tiger only on Thursday.

Preliminary investigations suggest that there is no doubt of any poaching or fight between the two wild animals. So after post mortem of the tiger by two doctors, the body of the tiger was disposed off in the presence of Ramnagar forest division officials, members from WWF and local representatives, said the sources.

Meanwhile, a leopard was reportedly found dead in CTR’s Dhela range on Thursday morning.

According to sources the leopard was killed during a fight with a tiger.

As the concerned officials were not available even on phone, the age of the leopard and the actual reason behind the death of the leopard is to be ascertained.

However, sources said it was a female leopard.
