BELLARY, MARCH 1. G. Ramaprasad, senior specialist and former Resident Medical Officer of Wellesely TB and Chest Diseases Hospital, underlined the need to prevent air pollution to health problems.
"It is the duty of every citizen to prevent air pollution," he said while delivering the Dr. Y.P. Vittal Endowment lecture on "Air pollution and its effect on human health" at the Indian Medical Association hall here on Tuesday.
He said that many inorganic pollutants such as Magnesium, Arsenic, and Lead, which can lead to lung diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Smoking, he said, had a harmful effect on the human body and Benzazppyrine, a chemical present in cigarettes, was found to cause lung cancer.
Dr. Ramaprasad said that the suspended particulate matter of more than 200 mg/cubic mm can lead to asthma, especially in children.
G. Pamapanagowda, senior surgeon and president of the Veerashaiva Vidyavardhak Sangha which runs a chain of educational institutions in the district, inaugurated the programme. He recalled the contribution of Dr. Y.P. Vittal in setting up the ENT department at the medical college and a branch of the association in the district.
