Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj Patil on Wednesday along with other experts discussed and emphasised on the need of creating more awareness to check environmental degradation, at an international conference on climate change held here.

Underlining the urgency needed to work towards battling climate change, Patil stressed on the need to educate general public, particularly the school and college going students regarding the ill-effects of climate change.

“Unless approach is holistic nothing can be achieved. Dedicated policy for getting investment in renewable energy sector, coupled with an investor-friendly frame work for energy sectors is the need of hour,” said Patil.

Complementing CII on its green initiatives, Patil said: “Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is taking up comprehensive causes and trying to create awareness about the importance of protecting the environment, and taking steps to create and use technologies, that can help in avoiding environmental degradation.”

Suresh Prabhu, chairman, Centre for Energy, Environment and Water and former Union Minister for Power, said: “If we do not make concerted efforts to check the degradation of environment from further degradation, humanity would suffer a lot in coming years.”

“We must bring all the stakeholders together, to give more relevant localised and regional perspective to address the problems arising out of climate change. It is high time that we must act fast, as the time is running out,” added Prabhu.

Discussing India’s perspective in context to the international scene, a presentation was made to bring out that India’s main problem with respect to climate change. It was stated that north India must lead the way and work for an integrated policy for water, power and environment conservation to be followed by the other States.

Patil said that nothing is more powerful than the nature, the entire environment. He stated that if human being respect the laws of nature, protect them, nature would help, protect and respect human being in return. “Awareness about this is most essential. Fortunately, this is now being created, at the international, national, State, and local level, by the enlightened persons, by the media, by the Governments,” said Patil.
