Oslo, Norway (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has expressed hope that Indonesia and Congo would cooperate in making their tropical forest a global solution to climate change.
Presidential spokesman for foreign affairs Dino Patti Djalal said here on Thursday that President Yudhoyono expressed the hope on the sidelines of the ongoing International Conference on Climate Change and Forest in Oslo, Norway.
"The Indonesian head of state expressed hope that the Democratic Republic of Congo with its largest tropical forest would with Indonesia and other Forestry-11 member countries to politically make tropical forests a global solution to climate change," Patti Djalal said.
According to Patti Djalal, it would increase the bargaining position of the developing countries in the eyes of donor countries in relation with the Emission Reduction from Deforestation and Degradation Plus (REDD+) mechanism.
After jointly opening the International Conference on Climate Change and Forests with Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, President Yudhoyono had a bipartite meeting with Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso for about 30 minutes.
The two state leaders had earlier expressed their stance in relation with the REDD+ mechanism for environmental preservation.
Indonesia and Congo also adopted non-binding framework of REDD+ mechanism from rain forest preservation.
Besides the bipartite meeting with the Congolese leader, President Yudhoyono also met with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Executive Director Archim Steiner and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark.
Patti Djalal said that in the meeting with Helen Clark, President Yudhoyono spoke more on the achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
"President Yudhoyono and Helen Clark discussed a joint commitment to achieving MDGs targets, while Clark said Indonesia had made a lot of progress in the achievement of the MDGs targets compared to other countries," Patti Djalal said.
He said President Yudhoyono was also scheduled to have a meeting with Prince Charles but it was later postponed.
