Council attends climate change workshop

The Cooma-Monaro Shire Council in South East New South Wales has attended a workshop with the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water on how Local Governments can handle the impacts of climate change.

The workshop was organised by the Local Governments Association, and aimed to identify key climate change risks, and what information and tools councils need to manage them.

Cooma-Monaro was the only council from the South East to attend.

The Council says it was invited, because it is one of only a few councils in the state to have undergone a climate change risk assessment.

Director of Environmental Services at the Council, Peter Smith, says the workshop explored strategies councils are using now.

"One of the approaches we had with our Council was to consider, 'what do we know is happening with our council right here, right now'," he said.

He says the impact of the drought was a key issue.

"We looked at what effect prolonged periods of drought are having on the way we operate," he said.
