Australian environment plan supported by public

A new opinion poll in Australia by the Greens Party shows the majority of voters support a carbon levy to cut emissions.

About 70 per cent of those surveyed said they want the Federal Government to negotiate for immediate action to tackle climate change.

The Australian government recently decided to shelve its Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme until 2013.

Green Party members have called on the government to reinstate the plan, considering the new opinion poll.

The government had claimed it put the emissions scheme on hold because of the lack of a breakthrough at last year's Copenhagen climate talks and also because it was being blocked by the major opposition party in parliament.
