Zero Waste: Alameda Earth Week Events

Here are just a few of the events held in Alameda as the city helps celebrate the 40th Earth Day. Through individual and community awareness and actions Alamedans can become agents of change for a healthier and more compassionate local and global Earth community.

Events held from Saturday, April 17 to Friday, April 23

Here are just a few of the events held in Alameda as the city helps celebrate the 40th Earth Day. Through individual and community awareness and actions Alamedans can become agents of change for a healthier and more compassionate local and global Earth community.

Saturday, April 17

Alameda Earth Day

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Zero Waste Alameda Earth Day at Washington Park, Eighth Street and Central Avenue; 40 booths of Earth-friendly resources for home and business. The day includes

Zero Waste film festival, live music, family and kid fun.

5 to 6:30 p.m. Future/Tense Exhibition at AutoBody Fine Art, 1517 Park St., including a film Sacred Sites: Shellmounds of Alameda and the Bay Area

Sunday, April 18

Integrity of Creation Sunday

10:30 a.m. Integrity of Creation Service at First Congregational Church, Chestnut Street and Central Avenue with Tom Christoffer of CASA followed by a presentation by CASA's Joyce Mercado and her green-sheet of ways to be more energy efficient.

Monday, April 19

Alameda Unified School District's Green Schools Challenge welcomes the elementary schools of Ruby Bridges, Franklin and Lum to comprehensive recycling in classrooms and food scrap diversion in every school and district facility. a Earth Week Kickoff at Paden School; opening ceremony will highlight progress to date of the school's lunchtime recycling program.

Tuesday, April 20

Paden Elementary School will recognize the third-grade lunchtime compost monitors.

7 to 9 p.m. "Environment and Climate Change" presentation by CASA in the Dal Cielo Room of Alameda Hospital; a look into how climate is impacting the Earth.

Wednesday, April 21

"Walk and Roll to School Day" at Paden Elementary School; not only great excercise, but a way to lessen environmental impact by walking and rolling to school.

Thursday, April 22

40th Earth Day International

Alameda High School Environmental Fair; the Sierra Student Coalition (recycling) and The Lumberjacks (tree planting) will give presentations and performances on environmental issues and actions during lunch.

5 to 10 p.m. Reception of Future/Tense Alameda ecology art show reception at AutoBody Fine Art, 1517 Park St., featuring a green organization and an industry faire.

Friday, April 23

6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Family movie night at Paden Elementary School: The movie Earth will be shown; the film follows three animal families during the course of one year.
