Call to join Earth Hour campaign

Ill-effects of climate change are there for everyone to see, says Collector

VIJAYAWADA: Speakers at the poster release function of ‘Join Earth Hour' campaign organised by the Andhra Chamber of Commerce and Industry here on Sunday highlighted the importance of participation by everybody in the fight against global warming regardless of whether their small steps would yield significant results.

They pointed out that there would definitely be a lot of impact if all people come together and marched ahead in the race for protection of the planet.

The experts gave a call to all in the city and surrounding areas to join the clarion call of Earth Hour by stopping their power usage for an hour starting from 8.30 p.m. and ending at 9.30 p.m. on March 27.

Among the speakers was district Collector Peeyush Kumar, who spoke as the chief guest of the occasion, while Andhra Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Muthavarapu Murali Krishna presided over the poster release function. The poster released on the occasion contained the message of the Join Earth Hour campaign with a call to one and all to understand its importance in the best interests of the life of all.

The poster brought out by the Andhra Chamber contained messages such as “Our earth and our responsibility” and “Stop global warming before it is too late”.

They organised a detailed presentation on the ill effects of unchecked use of energy on the environment and the factors that were leading to global warming.

Addressing the audience after the poster release function, Mr. Peeyush Kumar said that the ill effects of climate change and global warming were already there for every one to see, like the unexpected floods in Mumbai and also the anomalies in climate in Krishna district last year. He pointed out that while 49 mandals in the district suffered on account of deficit rainfall during last year, there were severe floods in the Krishna.

Mr. Murali Krishna said that with the cooperation of the district administration, the Andhra Chamber was ready to take forward the Join Earth Hour campaign by organising rallies and walks for creating awareness widely in the city.
