City's BRTS is talk of Seoul meet

AHMEDABAD: The six-month-old Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), popularly known as Janmarg, is taking Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to places.

Recently, the case study of Janmarg was discussed during Kyoto Declaration on the Promotion of Environmentally Sustainable Transport in Cities' at Seoul, Republic of Korea, during United Nations forum on climate change mitigation, fuel efficiency & sustainable urban transport. The event was organised by United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) with the support of Ministry of Environment, Government of Japan.

City mayor Kanaji Thakore also signed the Kyoto Declaration'. The declaration aims at motivating Asian cities to demonstrate effective leadership and initiate concrete measures to make cities clean, green and environment and people friendly through integrated environmentally sustainable transport strategies and measures. Ahmedabad is now among 44 cities from across the globe to sign the declaration.

According to a senior AMC official, Janmarg was shown to illustrate recent innovative initiative and good practices in fuel efficiency and climate change mitigation in the transport sector.

The forum saw participation from 10 mayors from Asian cities including Thakore.

According to UNCRD, the transport sector is emerging as the fastest growing source of energy related green house gas (GHG) emission accounting for more than 23 per cent of those emissions in 2006, road transport accounts for three quarters of all transport GHG emissions. GHG emissions are harmful to human health.

There are more 18 lakhs vehicles running on city roads adding to GHG emissions.

"A whole range of issues to enhance public transport and curb GHG, public private partnerships, financing public transport, and business models for green growth, among others were discussed," added the official.
