CHENNAI: Over 250 representatives of various non-governmental organisations from north Tamil Nadu took part in the National Environmental Awareness Campaign organised by the C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar Foundation here on Wednesday.

Speakers at the programme stressed the need to bring in a change in lifestyle to mitigate climate change – the theme of this year’s campaign. A. Ramachandran, Director, Centre for Climate Change, Adaptation and Research, Anna University, spoke about the Chennai’s waterbodies, their neglect, and the impact of climate change.

“Chennai once had 29 waterbodies, each for some of the prime areas. Today they have all disappeared and you have one big city,” he said.

In order to protect the waterbodies, Mr. Ramachandran suggested that people take up artificial recharge by creating catchment areas, surface storage and percolation tanks.
