NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has criticised the Manmohan Singh government’s stand on climate change stating that Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh had over the past two weeks been repeatedly introducing modifications and caveats to India’s fundamental negotiating position.

“Ahead of the crucial negotiations at Copenhagen, here is a Minister who publicly and repeatedly keeps modifying accepted policy positions,” a CPI(M) statement said on Saturday.

“Before the Indian delegation leaves for Copenhagen, the United Progressive Alliance government should categorically clarify what India’s negotiating position will be,” the CPI(M) said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has already accused Mr. Ramesh of rubbishing India’s consistent position on climate change and endorsing the principle put forward by the developed world.

The Centre for Science and Environment has said that the U.S.’ support for a Danish proposal would do away with the distinction between the developed and developing nations.

“Also, it negates the historic responsibility and will eliminate internationally binding targets.”
