Port of Spain (Trinidad &Tobago), Nov 27 – Climate Change will be the dominant issue at the three-day Commonwealth Heads of Government Meet(CHOGM) here with developing and island states of the 53-member Commonwealth group finalising a consensus approach on the issue before the global meet on Climate Change starting at Copenhagen from December 7. Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is already here after completion of his four-day state visit to the US along with other leaders of the Commonwealth nations. Queen Elizabeth II of England who is the head of the Commonwealth will inaugurate the meet. The presence of United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, French President Nicholas Sarkozy and the Prime Minister of Denmark who will host the Climate Change meet in Copenhagen next month has added to the significance of the deliberations here.

According to Shyam Saran, special envoy of the Indian Prime Minister on Climate Change, the theme of CHOGM 2009, ‘Partnering for a more equitable and sustainable future’ highlights the integrated and collective approach needed to tackle the multiple crises like economic meltdown, food security ,energy security and climate change plaguing the world today.

He said that the need of the hour is to adopt a new integrated and collaborative response on a solution for equitable burden sharing of the cost involved on the basis of each nation’s accountability on the issue. The emphasis will be on a strategic shift from an economy based on fuel-based growth to renewable source of energy, he added.

Saran said India will try to build a consensus on finding a solution based on the UN framework on Climate Change and the resolution adopted at Bali in Indonesia last year. Describing the CHOGM meet as a historic moment in dealing with the challenge of Climate Change, he said it reflects the growing awareness of small island nations like Trinidad and Tobago about the threat.

“We shall try to adopt a strong comprehensive approach here to influence the outcome of the Climate Change meet at Copenhagen next month,” Saran said.
