Climate change high on agenda of Commonwealth summit

Port of Spain (Trinidad & Tobago), Nov 28 – India would like to see a balanced, ambitious and equitable outcome at the global meet on climate change at Copenhagen early next month. This was coveyed by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to French President Nicholas Sarkozy and Prime Minister Gordon Brown of UK in separate discussions on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government meet here on Friday.

Addressing media persons, official spokesman of the Ministry of External Affairs Vishnu Prasad said the two important bilateral meetings were held in a warm and friendly atmosphere and there was a covergence of views with the primary focus being on the climate change issue. The leaders shared their views and their expectations at Copenhagen.

The Indian Prime Minister made it clear to Mr Sarkozy and Mr Brown that India had a major stake in Copenhagen as it was worst affected by climate change. He outlined the steps taken by India like the National Action Plan and spoke in detail about conserving energy, renewable sources of energy, carbon emmissions and related issues.While saying that India had an open mind on climate change, Dr Singh reiterated the historic responsibility of the developed nations to undertake adequate transfer of resources and technology to developing countries to undertake adequate steps.

In their discussions on the Afghanistan situation, the leaders agreed on the need for the international community to stay on course and to avoid double standards in fighting terrorism. The foreign leaders expressed their condolence on the first anniversary of the Mumbai terror attack.

Both President Sarkozy and Dr Singh today expressed their satisfaction on the progress made on the civil nuclear sector and steps taken to counter terrorism. Dr Singh also invited President Sarkozy to visit India next year.
