New Delhi, February 9: The Transport Department has decided to extend their drive against polluting vehicles by another week as per directions of the Chief Secretary. The department had started a week-long drive against vehicles emitting smoke on February 1.

‘‘The drive will now continue till February 15. In the last eight days, we have checked about 4,268 vehicles emitting smoke and 1,950 challans were issued against vehicles running without Pollution Under Control Certificate. Around 289 vehicles have been turned back from the border after they were found emitting smoke,’’ said P.C. Chaturvedi, Assitant Commissioner (Planning) in the department .

The department has also issued a public notice saying all Light Goods Vehicles should switch to CNG. ‘‘That measure is in accordance with our policy to control air pollution. There are about 50-60,000 LGVs in the Capital. If they switch to CNG, it will be good for Delhi. We have also resumed our drive against erring TSR drivers as requested by the Chief Secretary,’’ said an official.

The department had organised a disciplinary drive against TSR drivers from December 1, 2004, until January 31. The drive had been quite successful with TSR drivers plying by meter more often. However, they had hit back with a strike soon after in protest against the drive. In the resumed drive from February 3, 6,692 TSRs were checked and 189 challans have been issued.
