Oct 6: Centre has proposed Project Lion, a conservation project on the lines of Project Tiger, to protect remaining Asiatic lions, whose total population is over 300. Gir Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat is the last remaining home of the Asiatic Lions, whose population as per a 2005 Census was at 359. Though there had been several attempts by the Centre to reintroduce this highly endangered species at other wildlife reserve, Gujarat government denied everytime terming these species as "pride of Gujarat." Gujarat had also feared that Asiatic lion would have to compete with other big cats in any other wildlife reserve. With Project Lion in place, Centre would have greater say in conservation of these species.

Experts fear that the last wild population of this species could become extinct due to epidemics, natural disaster or even man-made disasters. Inbreeding among the species, as they are confined only to the Gir sanctuary, is also a big threat. Poaching remains one of the major threat. Experts want that there should be a second home for these lions to bolster their population and also to develop and maintain genetic diversity. which is essential for their survival. Over population in Gir sanctuary also lead to limited space for these big cats, who earmark their territories and therefore, fight among these animals are also reported. Over population also increases the chances of these animals venturing outside the core area and straying into villages, surrounding the Gir forest.

Centre had also suggested Kuno-Palpur wildlife sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh as the second home for these lions. But Gujarat government had always opposed the Centre’s move.

Meanwhile, a committee has also been constituted by the Centre to rectify any shortcomings of the Project Tiger.
