Sept. 21: The Centre has reconstituted the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). Its new members also include anthropologist Urmila Pingle, Magsaysay Award winner Prakash Muralaidhar Amte and BJP MP Maneka Gandhi. The authority is headed by environment minister Jairam Ramesh and has eight wildlife experts besides two Members of Parliament, namely Rajya Sabha MP Santosh Bagrodia besides Ms Gandhi.

It should be mentioned that Ms Gandhi had strongly opposed the amendments in the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, which had resulted in the setting up of the NTCA three years back.

Other members of the NTCA include wildlife experts Brijendra Singh, Valmik Thapar, P.K. Sen, Prakash, K Ullas Karanth, Samar Singh and Aparjita Dutta.

The authority has been set up under the Wildlife(Protection) Amendment Act, 2006, as recommended by the Tiger Task Force at the initiative of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The authority, reconstituted earlier this month, was first set up three-year ago to take up issues relating to country’s 38 tiger reserves which are home to around 1,400 big cats.

The authority is a statutory empowered decision-making body and has several functions towards tiger conservation.

Issues relating to tiger reserves, strengthening conservation measures and implementing anti-poaching measures, manpower, infrastructure and man-animal conflict besides problems pertaining to buffer and core areas within the national park comes under the purview of this body.
