Bhubaneswar, Feb. 6: Migratory birds have started flocking to Bhitarkanika National Park in coastal Orissa over the past one week and so have the poachers. Migratory birds come to Bhitarkanika every year during winter and leave for their permanent homes in March. More than 120 species have already arrived. The variants include hose from Siberia, Central Asia, western Europe and Mongolia. But all is not well for the migratory birds as poachers pose a big threat to their survival.
Often young boys from nearby villages kill the birds and sell them to hotels. Poachers trap birds by spreading nets on the paddy fields near Bhitarkanika. Many birds are also found poisoned by pesticides. Recently the Forest Department had even warned the people thorough posters not to consume the poisoned birds. Manoj Satapathy, a researcher on birds, said poaching should be immediately stopped to save the migratory birds. Some of them prefer salted water hence they come here . Migratory birds take rest in the mangrove trees and water bodies before flying to their destination
