July 6: With funds for the country’s action plan against climate change, increase in the allocation to save much prized tiger population and financial boost for cleaning the water bodies, the Union Budget 2009-2010 is likely to bring smiles on the faces of the green brigade. The Budget also took into consideration renewable energy sources along with the research and educational works going on in the field of environment conservation.

With stress on mitigation and adaptation measures for climate change, the government announced the much needed funds for the country’s National Action Plan against Climate Change (NAPCC) unveiled by the Prime Minister. With climate change dominating most of the national and international headlines and likely to be on the G-8 summit agenda, the government said the issue remains a major focus area.

Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee said the eight missions under the NAPCC represent a multi-pronged, long-term and integrated approach to tackle the menace.

"Necessary funds are proposed to be allocated for the missions that are being launched following the NAPCC unveiled last year," said Mr Mukherjee.
