The KIIT School of Biotechnology (KSBT) organised a workshop on ‘Awareness Building on Solid Waste Management’ on its premises here on Thursday. The workshop was inaugurated by K Jude Sekar, Additional PCCF (KL) in the presence of BC Sabat, Scientist, Department of Environment, Government of Delhi.

Sekar said urban solid waste management in developing countries has been one of the major problems faced by public administration. Many municipalities have deficient domestic waste collection, poor street cleaning services and improper waste disposals, he pointed out. The management of urban solid waste is presently a serious problem for every organisation, he said, adding that humans and animals run the risk of hazardous diseases if urban waste is not properly managed. Sekar extended her thanks to A Samanta, founder, KIIT & KISS, for organising the workshop.

Sabat focused on the dangerous effects of careless waste disposal and remarked that solid waste has emerged as a serious threat to environment. Improper disposal of solid waste adversely affects our environment & health and is an important cause of global warming leading to climate change, he asserted. He expressed his happiness, to see KIIT University’s green, pollution free environment.

A large number of participants from different organisations presented their papers. Some of the papers were on environmental issues with special reference to solid waste by Sabat, technology in solid waste management by VC Kalia, IGIB, Delhi and plastic waste management by Sanjay Rajput, Sriram Institute, Delhi.
