For safeguarding the already diminished tiger population in the State, Special Tiger Protection Force (STPF) will soon be deployed in three tiger reserves Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Pench. Every company will comprise 112 personnel headed by the Deputy Superintendent of Police.

According a Government press statement each company will have three S Sub Inspectors, 6 head constables and 30 constables. After getting detailed directives from National Tiger Protection Authority, Minister of State for forests Rajendra Shukla has instructed departmental officers to expedite formation of these forces.

STPF is not a Central force. It will be a force, which will work dedicatedly by understanding intricacies of tiger reserves. The personnel of the force will be deployed on deputation from local police. All these personnel will be below 40 years of age. The deputation will continue till the police creates permanent posts for the force.

The force will work under the control and guidance of the tiger reserve's Field Director, who will be responsible for their deployment and discipline. The Central Environment and Forest Ministry can send these companies to other places in emergency cases.

The force will have general powers at par with police. The State Government will also empower them to use firearms in dealing with poachers and organised criminals within the peripheries of tiger reserves. The force will be exclusively for tiger protection and in no case be deployed for any civil work.

Field Director of the tiger reserve concerned will send a monthly report about deployment of the force to the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). The officers of State Police Department and Central forces will impart training to the jawans of this force. The syllabus will include skill development, dealing with poaching and acting on the secret information.
