City marks green day

CHENNAI: Youngsters were the focus of World Environment Day celebrations in the city. With the theme for this year, Your planet needs you unite to combat climate change', various organisations pitched in to create awareness.

M Sekar, dean, College of Engineering, Guindy, announced that Anna University will soon form a Green Brigade' to help keep the campus clean and make students environment-conscious.

Sheraton Park Hotel and Towers even had a fashion parade. "We wanted to spread the message that recycling can be a good idea if one is imaginative. The fashion show featured clothes made out of old fabric," said Prathima Vasan, Manager Communications at the hotel. Students from classes VI to VIII at Vana Vani Matriculation Higher Secondary School, IIT campus, interacted with representatives of Courtyard By Marriott in a session highlighting global ecological concerns and plantes saplings.

Members of the Save Chennai Beaches' campaign resolved to continue their protest against the proposed Rs 1000-crore elevated expressway from Marina Beach to Kottivakkam.
