Champawat police seized three leopard hides in the last 12 days and arrested two poachers, when they were going to deliver skins of the bigcat in Uttar Pradesh. The arrested men have informed that they were mere carriers of the larger chain of poachers and dealers of wildlife products.

Police said Seeshram, resident of Barkum village Champawat, was arrested along with his relative Tirasme Ram on Thursday evening as they were on way to deliver the hides to a dealer in Bareilly.

Manch police station officer tried to stop the poachers but Tirasme Ram smelled the rot and fled from the spot even before cops could act. However, Seeshram who carried the bag with leopard skins was immodestly arrested by the police. As per sources one of the seized skins measured six-feet and two inches while second was five-feet long.

This was the second case of seizure of leopard skins by Champawat police in the last 12 days. Earlier, a police team of special operation group arrested a poacher Man Singh on Pithoragarh road on April 26. Singh, 45-years-old and resident of Pithoragarh was apprehended when he was going to deliver the leopard hide to an unidentified destination in Bareilly.

According to the police there was a common trend in both arrests. “During interrogation arrested poachers have revealed that they were only carriers of a larger chain of wildlife smugglers” Informed Champwat Superintendent of Police Riddhim Aggarwal.

SP said that arrested Seeshram and Mansingh were asked by some other consignees to deliver hides in Bareilly. According to Champawat SP, origin of all three seized leopard hides was Nepal and final destination was Bareilly in India. “As per Ram and Singh poaching was done in Nepal region” informed Aggarwal.

Police further informed that they were keeping close eye over poachers active in the region and efforts were made to strengthen information sources days.
