HYDERABAD, JAN. 28. A study of the rapidly growing city of Hyderabad has indicated high levels of airborne particulate matter from `smoking' vehicles, especially those that use adulterated fuel and two-stroke engines, and industrial emissions.

The report based on the study, part of project by the Environment Protection Training and Research Institute (EPTRI) using an integrated environmental strategies (IES) approach, has accordingly stressed the need for improved transportation and alternative industrial migration scenarios such as use of natural gas as a primary fuel.

Revealing this at a meeting of senior level policy makers held at EPTRI, Gachibowli here on Friday, the Institute director general, S.V. Prasad, said integrated strategies involving all the departments concerned could alone combat and mitigate air pollution in Hyderabad city.

The study, Mr. Prasad said was conducted with the support of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratories (NREL).
