SUALKUCHI, April 6 – As a part of national environment awareness campaign, a lecture-cum-workshop on, ‘climate change’, sponsored by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest and Regional Resource Agency, Assam Science Society and organised by North East Biotechnological Association in collaboration with Ganesh Das High School, Sualkuchi, was held on March 29 at the Ganesh Das High School premises.

The lecture-cum-work shop chaired by Dr Someswar Sarmah, professor of Gauhati University was inaugurated by Kanak Kakoti, headmaster of Ganesh Das High School.

Participating in the deliberation Dr Abani Kumar Bhagawati, professor, Geography department, Gauhati University explained the various factors related to climate change and its impact on human society. He said man is the creation of nature and so he is an integral part of nature. But with the development of civilisation, man is separating himself from nature. Man can not live without nature. So we should nurture nature for ourselves.

Speaking on global warming, Prof Bhagawati said that climate change will affect cropping pattern and crop yield directly by because of the extreme weather conditions and indirectly through changes in soil quality, pest and disease.

He also informed that the inter-governmental panel on climate change doubts that food production will decline in low-latitude regions, particularly in the seasonally dry tropics. In the tropical countries, including India, crop yield may decrease by about 30 per cent by the middle of the present century. This will have serious impact on food security of the concerned countries.

Participating in the workshop, Dr Mohan Chandra Kalita, professor, Biotechnology, Gauhati University, explained the green house effect on humans. He said 55 per cent of the total gases of the green house is filled with carbondioxide, which affects climate change. He, therefore, called upon the younger generation to change the modern trend of lifestyle and adopt sustainable life style for the sake of environmentally sustainable atmosphere.

The president of the discourse said that all problems emerged due to global warming or cooling and may be sorted out with advent of biotechnology and students should dare to face those problems.

The discourse was attended by Jogenetra Bharali, retired headmaster of Ganesh Das High School, Ram Charan Baishya, president of SMC, Ganesh Das HS, Dr Debabrat Baishya, lecturer of Pandu College, besides teachers and students of Ganesh Das HS.
